DIA 30 (19-12-2019): ROCK ISLANDS KAYAKING (DIA 2)

Amanece en el paraíso….cuando decido salir de la tienda de campaña Kim ya está en pie y ha recogido su cama. 

Tras lavarme un poco la cara, me acerco a la orilla y alucino porque parece que hoy va a salir el sol (cuan equivocada estaba….y que inocente era a las seis de la mañana…jeje).

Decidimos preparar nuestro desayuno, intentamos que sea lo más saludable posible, así que además del café, tenemos fruta y un revuelto matutino (y no porque llevaremos huevos…no).

Recogemos nuestras cosas, nos aseamos y Adam nos dice que la hora de salida será alrededor de las 8.30 ya que la marea está muy baja y necesitamos que la marea suba un poco. 

El plan del día es recorrer Risong Bay, acampando en Ngdech.

Pero cuando nos disponemos a partir…..adivina…empieza a llover ¿te lo puedes creer? yo no….estamos en la época seca….venga hombre….(así no puedo hacer fotos....jooo)

Bueno, pienso en positivo, seguro que es un chaparrón y en un rato se despeja…y total…como haremos snorkel en algún sitio…mojar…nos vamos a mojar igual…así que ….al agua patos. 

Adam nos comenta de remar hacia el mar, para coger profundidad y luego seguir a la derecha….seguimos sus instrucciones y se hace algo complicado seguir el rumbo ya que se ha levantado algo de viento, estamos en mar abierto y la lluvia se intensifica….

Al poco rato nos acercamos más hacia la costa y seguimos remando….yo por intuición porque a ratos dejo de ver a mis compañeros de aventuras….

Llegamos a la primera parada "Mandarin fish Lake" para hacer snorkel…y al agua que vamos…. el sitio está superchulo porque se ven los corales, las estrellas de mar, etc sin necesidad de bajarte del kayac...y los colores son preciosos....

Tras un rato…volvemos al Kayac … como sigue lloviendo a mares….nos refugiamos de la lluvia…debajo de un “risco”…donde Adam nos enseña un "ser"...

Pero parece que la lluvia no va a cesar….así que tras un snack nos vamos al siguiente punto del día: Fish Farm Lake

Adam nos explica que los japoneses hicieron como una piscifactoría para alimentar a sus tropas antes y durante la guerra, construyeron pequeñas piscinas y unos muros a la entrada del lago...pero no tengo fotos...porque llueve.

Adam nos propone hacer snorkel de nuevo….pero yo estoy bastante empapada como para irnos al agua….así que nos propone comer en una cueva….ay mi querida Kim….una cueva más….ella que es claustrofobica…. jeje

Comemos y como sigue lloviendo, les propongo irnos ya a la playa donde vayamos a acampar, porque yo ya no aguanto más la humedad en los huesos….gracias a que la temperatura del agua y ambiente es buena….sino a la media hora de estar en remojo, ya me habría resfriado.

Cuando llegamos a la zona de acampada…..sorpresa….deja de llover….lo cual ya me va bien…así me puedo poner ropa seca y mantenerme seca un rato. 

Lo primero colocamos la tienda. Aunque hay zona con techo….hemos visto que las ratas ya han pasado a darnos la bienvenida, por lo que Kim propone colocar la tienda cerca de la orilla, a ver si corre un poco de brisa y la pobre puede dormir dentro….yo no me preocupo porque he traído ropa de lana merina, de modo que si me da frío….me abrigo y listo. 

Tras ubicar la tienda, y volver a inflar los colchones y preparar la zona de dormir….voy en busca del baño….es “este campamento” tenemos dos baños….pero he de reconocer que están un poco a desmano….con luz solar…no me va a importar ir al baño…pero por la noche….ya te digo yo que voy a tener que buscar un lugar alternativo….jejej

Además en uno de ellos hay un amigo….no muy agradable de ver en según que momentos….

Decidimos rebuscar entre nuestras provisiones a ver que tenemos de cena…

Pero aún es pronto para preparar la cena, de modo que charlamos un rato con los austriacos que también decidieron recogerse pronto porque la lluvia….incomoda. 

Sin perder la esperanza….cenamos cerca de la orilla con idea de ver el atardecer…pero solo vemos nubes en distintas tonalidades del gris.

De modo que cuando llega la noche profunda, ya que ni vemos las estrellas, nos vamos a la tienda….si ya se que no son ni las 19.00…así que nos ponemos un poco de música y a charlar un rato antes de caer en brazos de morfeo. 

Day 8: Rock Island Kayaking Day 2 

Needless to say….my night of camping in the shelter on the beach just sucked!!! Not only did I sweat in portions of my body that you should not sweat in while sleeping but I also had the added joy of the mice playing in my hair (remember by the pictures that my hair is short!) all night long but also had the mice running over my body and face. Too much humidity!! Too much heat!! Too much stillness of the air!! Too much of nature in the shelter!! I am fully awake at 0400hrs…..to damn early!!

Wait until I start to hear noises and such and finally get up to start the day. Make some of my Starbucks coffee!!!! Slowly start to get ready for the day. Notice the Austrian couple by the water looking at something so decide to go look.

They have found a small Spotted Moray Eel cruising along the edge of the water by the beach!!! Nice find as they are normally hard to find.

We make a camping breakfast. One of the meals that I have packed is a freeze-dried breakfast meal of eggs and potatoes. We boil the water and get to re-hydrating the food. I have some tuna and crackers. 

After our award-winning breakfast, set wait for the tide and the rain – need to tide to start to rise and the rain to stop!

The Austrian couple launches first. We finish packing items in and on our kayaks and we are off!!

And the rain promptly starts again!!

Slow paddle through driving rain!! Luckily, the rain is to our backs so we a only slightly sheltered on our lower backs by the back rests on the kayaks! Onward we paddle hoping for a bit of a break and some sun to help dry us out. We decide to not go to Black Tip Lake, a nursery for baby Black Tip Sharks, since the rain will make it very difficult for us to see the baby sharks. Instead, we paddle on.

The sun does come out some and we take a paddle into Mandarin Fish Lake.

We are able to do some snorkeling in this beautiful lake!!

We see Mandarin Fish and more Pajama Cardinal Fish (see pictures from yesterday….did not think you needed more pictures). We take a slow cruise around the lake and observe the fish and corals and all the wonderful life. The water is actually so clear that we can see the fish and life from the kayak…but we decide that snorkeling is a good idea.

We decide to take our leave of the area and the rain hits again…..of course! We decide to take shelter under a ledge in hopes that the storm will pass soon.

We finally give up waiting on the rain as it seems to just not want to go away…..and we are in the dry season!! We decide to paddle to Fish Farm Lake. This area is called that due to the fact the that Japanese built a fish farm in the lake for raising all the fish that they ate to help sustain the Japanese people before and during the war.

Here you can see the concrete part of an old pin used to hold the baby fish before they were released into the lake. The Japanese had “walled” off the lake with an underwater concrete structure that predatory fish could not get past even during high tide. 

The rain just keeps coming!!

We are all very soaked by the rain. We make way to a small cave for a bit of lunch and a rain break.

After a small lunch, we decide to head out to the camping beach as we are all cool and wet.

We find the Austrian couple already at the beach. They have warmed some water for us for coffee to help warm ourselves – so nice of them to do this!! As the rain starts to end, we survey the area for our tent. The shelter does not appear to be a good place and after my experience the night before, we decide that we do not wish to camp so close to the mice and rats.

I end up finding a nice place on high ground with beach area on both sides. If we are going to be rained on and hot, might as well have a nice location!!

Make dinner with the other MRE of Cheese Tortellini in red sauce and Lentils with Beef and vegetables.

The rain has pretty much stopped we are able to enjoy our dinner on the beach and enjoy the view a bit too.

As the sun sets, we end going to bed…..still hot!!
